Arrival at Sarlat-Caneda station

Périgord Noir a car: 48 hours to slow down

What if, during your stay, you left your car in the parking lot?

In Périgord Noir, it's not only possible... it's also particularly enjoyable. Train, bike, canoe, walking: here, everything flows naturally.

Here is an idea for a relaxing and inspiring getaway to discover the region in a different way.

Day 1 : Sarlat on foot, the luxury of taking your time

Arriving by train in Sarlat-la-Canédameans a change of pace. When you step off the platform, there is no stressful traffic: the town is easy to explore on foot.

Start by strolling through the medieval center. The cobbled streets, golden facades, and lively squares create a vibrant setting, especially on market days (Wednesday and Saturday mornings). It's the perfect opportunity to put together a 100% local picnic: goat cheese, walnuts, crusty bread, strawberries in season...

In the afternoon, let your desires be your guide:

  • a walking loop around the city, such as the Salamander trail,

  • a themed guided tour to immerse yourself in history,

  • or simply take a break on the terrace to observe life in Sarlat.

At dusk, Sarlat takes on a different atmosphere. The soft lighting transforms the stone into a movie set. Without cars, strolling around becomes a total pleasure.

DAY 2 : in spring or summer, head for the Dordogne Valley

From Sarlat, the greenway provides easy access to the valley on foot or by bike. Head towards Carsac-Aillac for an immersion in nature.

Fancy a bit of adventure? Canoeing down the river offers a unique perspective on the cliffs and villages. Let yourself be carried along by the current to La Roque-Gageac, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France.

Now, take your time:

  • to explore the narrow streets nestled against the cliff,

  • to climb up to the troglodytic fort,

  • or even enjoy a terrace facing the Dordogne.

During the summer season, shuttle buses facilitate the return journey. With no logistical constraints, the experience remains smooth and hassle-free.

Day 2 (OPTIONAL) : Why not immerse yourself in the Vézère Valley?

A different atmosphere, a different valley. Take the train to Le Bugue, in the heart of the Vézère Valley.

Between prehistoric heritage, traditional markets (Tuesdays and Saturdays), and peaceful riverbanks, you can plan your day at your own pace.

For a scenic break, rent a bike and follow the greenway to Limeuil, a beautiful village located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère. The climb up to the gardens offers spectacular views of both rivers.

The return journey is peaceful, with that rare feeling of having explored a lot... without ever rushing.

Our practical advice:

  • Check train and seasonal shuttle schedules in advance.

  • Reserve your bike in advance during peak season.

  • Opt for a lightweight backpack and a refillable water bottle.

  • Remember to wear comfortable shoes: everything here is explored on foot.
